Place a simple café order and ask for the bill politely.

Hear the lesson phrases

Google voice when available; device voice as a fallback.

Read the audio transcript

Buenos días. Quisiera un café con leche, por favor. ¿Algo más? No, gracias. ¿Para aquí o para llevar? Para aquí, por favor. La cuenta, por favor.

Place a simple order

A friendly greeting followed by your order and por favor is enough for a simple café visit. Un café, por favor means a coffee, please.

For a softer request, learn quisiera… as a useful phrase meaning I would like… You do not need to study the full verb tense to start using this polite expression.

Buenos días. Un café, por favor.
Good morning. A coffee, please.
Quisiera un té, por favor.
I would like a tea, please.
Un café con leche, por favor.
A coffee with milk, please.

Listen for a follow-up question

You might hear ¿Algo más? (anything else?) or ¿Para aquí o para llevar? (for here or to go?). A short reply is natural: no, gracias; para aquí; or para llevar.

Con means with and sin means without. They help you customize an order without building a long sentence. Drink names and serving styles vary by region, so ask when you are unsure.

¿Algo más?
Anything else?
No, gracias.
No, thank you.
Para llevar, por favor.
To go, please.
Sin azúcar, por favor.
Without sugar, please.

Ask about prices and request the bill

Use ¿Cuánto cuesta? to ask the price of an item. When you are ready to pay for a table-service order, la cuenta, por favor asks for the bill.

Read the conversation below aloud, taking both parts. Then change the drink or add para llevar. The goal is to reuse a few phrases in a situation that matters to you.

—Buenos días. Quisiera un café con leche.
—Good morning. I would like a coffee with milk.
—¿Algo más? —No, gracias.
—Anything else? —No, thank you.
—¿Para aquí o para llevar? —Para aquí, por favor.
—For here or to go? —For here, please.
La cuenta, por favor.
The bill, please.
