STUDY GUIDE

Spanish learning stages

Choose your starting point by what you can do. Your listening, speaking, reading, and writing may be at different levels.

This is our suggested way to combine resources, informed by learning research. The CEFR ranges are orientation, not test results or promised outcomes. Move on when the tasks become comfortable, and keep supporting weaker skills.

01Pre-A1 → A1

Basic introductions and questions

Combine a beginner course with listening you can understand. Practice common phrases alongside sentence structure.

What to work on

  • Follow one structured course; pause to answer aloud before hearing the explanation.
  • Listen to short, supported material. Repeat a familiar passage and notice its sounds.
  • Practice introductions and simple questions with someone willing to help.
A PRACTICAL CHECKPOINT

You can introduce yourself and exchange basic personal information when the other person speaks clearly and helps.

Resources to consider

Choose a small combination. You don’t need to use every resource.

Further study: Continue the course and add short readings and conversations about daily life.

02A1 → A2

Everyday interactions

Practice short exchanges with familiar vocabulary. Use material at your level and review phrases over time.

What to work on

  • Listen and read for meaning, using a transcript or translation when you need support.
  • Try to recall useful words before revealing the answer; review them again on later days.
  • Rehearse everyday situations, then try a short exchange and ask for specific feedback.
A PRACTICAL CHECKPOINT

You can exchange information in familiar routines such as shopping, directions and talking about your day.

Resources to consider

Choose a small combination. You don’t need to use every resource.

Further study: Add longer stories and less scripted conversations while continuing to use easier material.

03A2 → B1

Independent communication

Read and listen to familiar topics. Use conversation and writing to identify vocabulary and grammar that need further practice.

What to work on

  • Read and listen regularly to material whose main message you can follow.
  • Describe an experience, summarize something you enjoyed, and ask follow-up questions.
  • Review recurring gaps after feedback, then try the same task again with less preparation.
A PRACTICAL CHECKPOINT

You can follow clear speech on familiar subjects, describe experiences and manage common travel situations.

Resources to consider

Choose a small combination. You don’t need to use every resource.

Further study: Study a wider range of topics and speakers, and practice explaining opinions in detail.

04B1 → B2

Extended conversation and texts

Practice understanding and discussing a wider range of subjects. Combine familiar material with more demanding conversations and texts, focusing on the skills required for your goals.

What to work on

  • Explore longer material from different speakers, regions and subjects; use support selectively.
  • Discuss a viewpoint, explain your reasons, and respond to questions you did not prepare for.
  • Seek feedback on clarity and recurring errors while revisiting familiar tasks to build fluency.
A PRACTICAL CHECKPOINT

You can sustain more spontaneous interaction and explain viewpoints with reasons and detail across a broader range of subjects.

Resources to consider

Choose a small combination. You don’t need to use every resource.

Further study: Choose a continuing goal: work, study, friendships, travel or an exam. Progress can differ across listening, speaking, reading and writing.

STUDY SCHEDULE

Practice all four language skills

Across your week, make space for a course or focused study, understandable listening and reading, using Spanish with someone, and reviewing familiar material.

A short session can focus on one of these. Longer sessions can combine them. This is a flexible planning suggestion, not a scientifically established minute-by-minute formula.
