Learning without an account
This version does not ask you to create an account or enter your name, email address, or payment details. You can use the lessons and practice tools without signing in.
Website analytics
We use Google Analytics to measure visits and understand how people use the website. The Google tag sends website usage information, such as pages viewed, to Google and uses cookies to distinguish visitors and sessions. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services and Google’s privacy policy.
You can use your browser’s privacy settings or a content blocker to limit analytics tracking. Learning progress is stored separately in your browser as described below.
Progress stored in your browser
Completed lessons, the last course lesson opened, first and best exercise scores, questions queued for review, saved verbs, flashcard session position, familiar words, selected study set, topic, difficulty, vocabulary search filters, and practice direction are saved using your browser’s local storage. Typed exercise answers and practice writing are not stored. This information is not sent to our content system. It stays in that browser and does not sync between devices.
You can change a flashcard’s familiar status while practicing. To remove all saved learning progress, clear this website’s site data in your browser settings. Private browsing and some browser settings may prevent saving.
Pronunciation and media
When you press a pronunciation button, the site sends the selected published lesson, flashcard, or verb text to our server to request generated audio. If the audio is not already cached and Google Cloud Text-to-Speech is configured, our server sends that published text to Google for synthesis. Generated audio may be cached for up to 30 days. These requests do not include your learning progress, typed answers, or practice writing. If cloud audio is unavailable, the site may use your browser’s speech service; your browser or operating system may use an online service for the selected voice, and its own privacy settings apply. This website does not request microphone access or record your voice.
Lessons may include audio hosted elsewhere or links to videos. Playing externally hosted media contacts that provider. A video link opens the provider’s website, where its privacy policy applies.
External learning resources
Directory links take you to other providers. Their accounts, payment terms, cookies, and privacy policies apply when you visit or use their services. Browsing this directory does not create an account with those providers.
Website delivery
The hosting provider processes ordinary connection information, such as your IP address and requested page, to deliver and protect the website. The content editor is separate from the public lessons and is intended for authorized editors.
Future changes
If accounts, email subscriptions, payments, or other data collection features are introduced, this page will be updated to describe the information involved.
