Asking for directions
Ask where a place is and understand a few short directions.
What you’ll work on
- Ask for the location of a destination.
- Recognize common direction phrases.
- Say how you travel.
A short conversation
Google voice when available; device voice as a fallback. Read along, then try each line aloud.
Perdón, ¿dónde está la estación?
Excuse me, where is the station?
Está cerca. Sigue todo recto.
It is nearby. Go straight ahead.
¿Y después?
And then?
Gira a la derecha. La estación está al lado del parque.
Turn right. The station is next to the park.
¿Puedo ir a pie?
Can I go on foot?
Sí, está a cinco minutos.
Yes, it is five minutes away.
Ask where a place is
Start with perdón to get someone’s attention, then ask ¿Dónde está…? You can add the name of a place if you know it. If you are looking for any place of a certain kind, use ¿Hay… cerca? instead.
¿Cómo llego a…? asks how to get to a destination. With el, the preposition a forms al: ¿Cómo llego al museo? Learn a short question you can say comfortably, then leave space to listen to the answer.
Understand basic directions
Three helpful direction phrases are sigue todo recto (go straight ahead), gira a la derecha (turn right), and gira a la izquierda (turn left). These are instructions to tú. A speaker using usted may say siga and gire instead.
You do not need the full command system to understand these useful phrases. Hasta marks an endpoint: hasta el parque means as far as the park. Repeat the key part back or ask for repetition if the route is too long to remember.
Describe a mode of transport
A pie means on foot. For many vehicles, use en: en autobús, en tren, en taxi. Autobús is widely understood, though local words for bus vary. The choice of transport can change how useful a set of directions is, so ask explicitly.
¿Puedo ir a pie? asks whether walking is possible. Está a cinco minutos expresses a short travel time; the mode may be understood from the conversation. Practice giving directions on a small imaginary map instead of memorizing a route without context.

Showing an answer makes that question a practice item worth zero for this attempt. Retry with the answers hidden when you’re ready. If audio cannot play, use Show answer / text to practice by reading.
