Greetings and goodbyes
Greet someone, ask how they are, and say goodbye.
What you’ll work on
- Choose a greeting for the situation.
- Ask and answer ¿Cómo estás?
- End a short conversation politely.
A short conversation
Google voice when available; device voice as a fallback. Read along, then try each line aloud.
¡Hola! Buenos días.
Hello! Good morning.
¡Hola! ¿Cómo estás?
Hello! How are you?
Bien, gracias. ¿Y tú?
Fine, thank you. And you?
Muy bien. ¡Hasta luego!
Very well. See you later!
Choose a greeting
Hola is a general greeting suitable throughout the day. The h is silent, so begin with the vowel sound. Use hola on its own or follow it with a greeting for the time of day.
Buenos días is a morning greeting. Buenas tardes is used in the afternoon, while buenas noches works in the evening and at night. People draw these time boundaries differently across regions, so listen to the people around you.
Ask and answer how someone is
¿Cómo estás? addresses one person informally. Bien, gracias is a complete and natural short reply. Add ¿Y tú? to invite the other person to answer. Practice the question and reply together as a complete exchange.
If the relationship calls for usted, use ¿Cómo está? and ¿Y usted? The choice of tú or usted depends on the place, relationship, and situation. We start with tú in most conversations and point out other forms as they become useful.
End the conversation
Hasta luego is a friendly see you later, even without a specific appointment. Hasta mañana means see you tomorrow. Adiós is another general goodbye. Buenas noches can also be a farewell when leaving at night.
Read Maya and Luis’s exchange aloud twice. On the second pass, cover the translation and replace bien with muy bien or más o menos. The goal is to choose a phrase yourself, rather than only recognize it on the page.

Practice questions
Try every question, then check your answers. Capital letters and punctuation do not affect your score. Accents and ñ do matter.
Showing an answer makes that question a practice item worth zero for this attempt. Retry with the answers hidden when you’re ready. If audio cannot play, use Show answer / text to practice by reading.
Independent practice
These are independent practice tasks. The site does not record your voice, save your writing, or grade open-ended answers. Ask a teacher or conversation partner for feedback when you can.
Speaking practice
Play both parts of the dialogue. Then greet an imaginary neighbor, give a different answer, and say goodbye without reading.
Writing practice
Write a four-line conversation using a greeting, ¿Cómo estás?, a reply, and a farewell.
