Hay and location expressions
Introduce places with hay and locate known things with estar.
What you’ll work on
- Use hay for there is and there are.
- Ask where a known place is.
- Describe simple positions.
A short conversation
Google voice when available; device voice as a fallback. Read along, then try each line aloud.
¿Hay una farmacia cerca?
Is there a pharmacy nearby?
Sí, hay una farmacia en esta calle.
Yes, there is a pharmacy on this street.
¿Dónde está la farmacia?
Where is the pharmacy?
Está al lado del banco.
It is next to the bank.
Introduce something with hay
Hay means there is or there are. The form stays the same with a singular or plural noun: hay una farmacia; hay dos farmacias. You can use it to find out whether a place, item, or service exists.
When introducing a countable thing, use un, una, a number, or a plural noun without a definite article. Hay un banco introduces a bank. Later you can refer to that known bank with el banco.
Locate a known place or object
Use ¿Dónde está…? to ask the location of a known singular place or thing. Use están when the subject is plural. The contrast is useful: ¿Hay un banco? asks whether one exists; ¿Dónde está el banco? asks where the identified bank is.
The same distinction helps you describe a room. First say hay una mesa. Then locate it: la mesa está cerca de la puerta. You are introducing an item, then giving information about that item.
Use position expressions
Useful position phrases include cerca de (near), lejos de (far from), al lado de (next to), and delante de (in front of). Spanish en can mean in, on, or at; the situation supplies the more specific English meaning.
De and el combine as del: al lado del banco. De la stays as two words: cerca de la farmacia. Describe two places on an imaginary street, then change their positions and say the descriptions again.
